Main Library, Downtown
401 E. University Ave.
The LWVAC is sponsoring a panel discussion of the November ballot referendum on GRU management at 6:15 p.m. on March 21st at the Alachua County Library Headquarters at 401 E. University Avenue, Gainesville. The panelists include: economist Dave Denslow, along with current and former City Commissioners, Harvey Ward, Susan Bottcher and Todd Chase. Panelists will discuss the bill's potential financial impact on GRU customers; voters’ influence over utility issues, and the effects on Gainesville of a possible reduction in the GRU transfer to the City’s general fund, among other issues.
If passed, this bill would cede nearly full control of GRU from the City Commission to a managing utility authority of five unpaid Commission-appointed members. Until recently, the bill was never publicly discussed locally, and had no public input at its inception. Therefore, the goal of the League is to analyze the bill, review descriptive documents and address its implications for Gainesville residents, businesses, and county GRU service users.
